Quietest Balearic. Best beaches of the three. The llaüt-boat charter to north-coast deserted coves is the move.

The Riviera town that locals quietly recommend over Nice. Sub-tropical microclimate, lemon-tree gardens that supply Paris's Pâtisserie Cyril Lignac, an old town climbing the hill to the cemetery where Aubrey Beardsley is buried.

Glamour, mild winter, art cities nearby. Expensive but reliably stunning.

Classic Northern European beach island. The Sóller wooden train through the Tramuntana is the thing locals take visitors on.

La Concha bay is the most beautiful urban beach in Europe. Basque pintxos in the old town, three Michelin three-stars within 30 minutes by car, and Atlantic-tempered weather that escapes the worst of the Spanish heatwave summer.

Paella's actual home. Cheaper than Barcelona, sunnier, old town underrated. Locals insist: chicken-rabbit-snail, never seafood.

Culture plus Aegean warmth. July–August 40°C and smog — avoid peak summer.

Turquoise Poetto beach. Don't take sand home — the €3,000 fines are real, X-rays at the airport.

The cliffs, the Faraglioni, the Blue Grotto, the Piazzetta. Yacht season runs June through September; the island empties dramatically by October when the day-trippers stop coming.

Green, lush, family-friendly. Wettest Greek island in shoulder seasons — but that's why it's so green.

Northern Albanian Riviera — long pebble beach below the Llogara pass, the closest thing to Greek-island scenery without the prices. Newer beach clubs since 2022 raised the standard without breaking the village character.

Walled city, yacht scene, cruise crowds. Go shoulder-season. €25 Dubrovnik Pass pays for itself day one.

Clifftop Chora village 200m above the Aegean. The Folegandros nobody had heard of in 2018 and everyone now has. No airport; ferry from Santorini (1h) or Milos (1.5h). Tiny population, three streets, the great escape from the Mykonos-Santorini circuit.

Where the Maltese go for the weekend. Limestone cliffs, the inland sea cave dive site at Dwejra, Ggantija temples older than Stonehenge, and a noticeably slower rhythm than Malta proper. Ferry from Malta 25 min.

Longest Greek sun season — genuinely swimmable mid-May to late October. Raki, philoxenia, the Samaria Gorge.

The most-photographed Adriatic island. Lavender fields in June, Renaissance Hvar Town, the Pakleni Islands as the boat-day extension. Expensive in August; properly under-priced in late September.

Volcanic thermal island Italians keep to themselves. Hot springs, fish-and-pasta tavernas in the back streets of Sant'Angelo, and a quarter of Capri's prices. Ferry from Naples is 1h.

Four small islands a swim away from a pine-fringed beach. Turquoise water more vivid than most of the Greek islands, prices about a third. Books out in August, calm the rest of the season.

Pre-Alpine lake at 200m elevation. The lake itself stays swimmable June through September (22–24°C), surrounding mountains keep nights cool, and the villages — Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio — are operatic.

The Aeolian archipelago is the under-the-radar Italian island chain — Lipari is the most accessible, with hydrofoils to Stromboli (the active volcano), Salina (the caper-and-Malvasia island), and Panarea (the yacht island).

The volcanic-beach island. Sarakiniko's moonscape, Kleftiko's boat-only sea caves, Tsigrado's rope-descent beach. Less crowded than Santorini, more dramatic geology, half the prices.

Party plus beaches. Constant summer wind. Price gouging in July. Paros is the counter-move.

Gateway to Amalfi and Pompeii. Pickpockets and scooter snatchers operate in broad daylight — bags on the wall side of the pavement.

The largest Cycladic island and the alternative to Mykonos. Best beaches in the Cyclades on the west coast, mountain villages in the interior (Apeiranthos), and a fraction of Mykonos's prices.

Sun, food, history, cheap. Mondello beach 20 min from the old town. Arancini round here, conical in Catania — don't confuse them.

Black-volcanic, wind-carved, between Sicily and Tunisia. Zibibbo wine vines pressed into the lava, dammuso stone houses, the Specchio di Venere thermal lake. Italian designers' favourite weekend.

The Cyclades for food. Paros has the wine (Mantilaria), the fish (Ambelas harbour), and the Naoussa village that locals point to when asked what Mykonos used to be. Ferry from Athens 3h.

Smaller, brighter, less famous Ischia neighbour. Italian Capital of Culture 2022; painted houses tumbling down to Marina Corricella; 4 km long, walkable end-to-end in 90 minutes. No hotels above three stars and no day-tripper economy.

300+ sunny days, 'the Sun Island'. Reliable, family-friendly, long season. Post-2023-fire rebuild essentially done.

The green Aeolian. Capers and Malvasia delle Lipari — the sweet dessert wine that the Aeolians built their agriculture around. Two extinct volcanoes, three sleepy villages (Santa Marina, Malfa, Rinella), and the film location for Il Postino.

Stay in Imerovigli, not Oia. Same caldera sunset, 30–40% less. Meltemi wind July–August is real.

Across the strait from Corfu, two-thirds the price. Promenade-and-pebble-beach Mediterranean with Butrint's Roman ruins inland and the Ksamil archipelago an hour south.

Dalmatian base. Roman palace as city centre. Island-hopping on the cheap ferry system.

Active volcano you can climb. Eruptions every 15–20 minutes from the summit; black sand beach at the base; one road, no cars, and the village of Ginostra accessible only by boat. Sleeping under volcanic glow is the experience.

Sicily's clifftop showcase town. Greek theatre with Mount Etna as the backdrop, the Isola Bella nature reserve below, and a corso that runs the length of the old town. The 2022 White Lotus filmed here; the prices have followed.

English-speaking, warmest sea in the EU. €3 TD-bus from airport, Crystal Palace Bar's €0.40 pastizzi is the breakfast.

Cheapest mid-range in the Mediterranean. Kaleiçi Ottoman-mansion riads. Price in euros — lira inflation is volatile.

Chic resorts, Aegean breezes. Photogenic coastline, quieter than the Riviera crowd.

Low-cost flights, reliable sun April–November. Quieter than Paphos in shoulder season.

Mildest winter of any European destination. Cyprus is EU but not Schengen — the 90/180-day hack.

Best beaches in the Canaries. Kitesurf capital. The wind is a feature, not a bug.

Island of eternal spring. 15–25°C year-round. Hiking on levadas, not lying on a beach — the beach is in Porto Santo, one day-ferry away.

Dunes, year-round mild, gay-friendly. North is cloudy; south is Europe's solar plant.

Volcanic, near-desert, essentially rainless. César Manrique code — no building over a palm tree. Constant trade winds.

Closest long-haul winter sun. Barren, windy, 25°C November–June.

Cool Atlantic Morocco. Mild year-round, never too hot, Berber coast base.

Value all-inclusive, mild winter. Heatwaves hit 45°C — avoid July–August.

Cheap winter sun plus Red Sea. El Gouna is the adult version, Hurghada downtown is where vendor hassle lives.

Not a beach destination — 170 km inland. A culture and light destination. Winter: cheap and lovely. Summer: brutal.

World-class reef diving, reliable winter sun. Resort zone is a bubble — stay inside it.

Luxury, beaches, stopover. May–September unusable outdoors. CBD oil = arrest. Cannabis metabolites = prison.

More interesting than Dubai. Culture, desert, Indian Ocean. Check US advisory level — moved to Level 3 in 2026.

Fjord capital. Cool, green, lots of rain — perfect escape when the south melts.

Baltic island, sunniest in Denmark, still well under continental heatwave highs.

England's most photogenic seaside town — Regency architecture, pebble beach, the Pavilion, the Lanes. Train from London 50 min. When Europe melts at 42°C, Brighton sits at 24°C with a breeze.

Rain trade-off, but midges aside, July highs rarely exceed 18°C.

Mountains into Atlantic, red cabins. Sea too cold to swim even in August.

Mildest UK sea, surf, beaches. Cool even when Europe bakes.

Waterfalls, geothermal pools, stubbornly low teens even in continental heatwaves.

The longest wooden pier in Europe, classic spa-town promenade, and a Baltic that warms unexpectedly fast in July. Direct flights from most of Northern Europe and a budget-resort price level.

Arctic cool even at the height of summer. Midnight sun, fjords, no heat.

1,600m — thin air, cold nights, Matterhorn right there.
